Personal Computer Ownership in The Company

Personal computer (PC) investment life cycle in the company includes planning, purchasing, installation, operations and maintenance, and disposal. After the installation phase, the phase of operational and maintenance become an important thing and take about 85% time of life cycle. It means that the maintenance strategy is a key success factor of PC ownership. The successful operations and maintenance work hard to sustain a high availabilities from their equipments and for low unit cost. It is important to realize that operating and maintenance costs can only be changed or removed during the planning phase. A high availability of equipments can be formed with reduced failure and scheduled maintenance.
A PC can be regarded as a modular assembly, and one that can be constructed from the assembled component parts. The failure probability of a component or system can be estimated experimentally from field data, provided the population studied is reasonably large and the rate of occurrence of failure is sufficiently high as to provide a high confidence level in the derived failure probabilities. The data collected can be used in a very specific way, to provide through-life costs for the PC population and to provide the costs essential to the planning of a quality maintenance program. Based on the results of some research has been done, the pattern of component or system failures appear to be skewed to the early part of life the cost of unavailability and unreliability is similarly skewed into the early life of the machines. If this happens in the company, it is important for purchasers and maintainers. Where large numbers of PC are replaced at the same time in an organization the immediate effect is likely to be a significant number of early failures – damaging to the organization’s operational availability, and a busy period for the maintainer– possibly damaging to the reputation. This suggests that a program of rolling replacement for PCs would be less damaging for many organizations.
The maintainers can do nothing to change what happened during the planning phase, it is all history by the time they work in the business. But they can change the project decisions to be made in future if they capture good, sound records of the performance and costs of the production equipment used in the operation. With believable evidence of equipment performance provided by the maintainers, future project planner will make better decisions in designing and selecting future operating company.
